P0405, P0406, False EGR codes – Dodge Trucks, Jeep
Dodge has disclosed a problem with some 2006-07 Ram Trucks and Durangos and Jeep Grand Cherokees and Commanders. All of these vehicles were built before 2-15-07 and may light up the “Check Engine” light and store P0404, P0405, or P0406 EGR position sensor codes. Check the EGR with a scanner, but chances are the codes are “false codes: due to a programming error in the PCM. The fix involves reflashing the PCM with software release 7.03 SP1 or higher. That’s right, it means a trip back to the dealer and if the truck is out of warranty, expect to pay for the privilege of having Dodge fix their defective software.

Hello; I am first going to say THANK YOU!! for the informative information that you post on the web. Second; the posting on the Dodge Truck/Jeep-False EGR codes should not only be for the 2006-2007 vehicle it also needs to be for the 2005 vehicles as well because the PO404 code that is mentioned is making my malfunction light come on in my Durango.
agan thank you for the info but i am also having a sensor showing a P0404 and a P0406. were is the ERG position sensor found on a 05 Dodge ram 1500 4.7? any feed back would help
I am also getting a P0404 on my 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan and have noticed several complaints of the same on the web. The vehicle seems to be running fine. Where did you get your information on the false EGR codes? Thanks.
A P0404 code on the 05 Caravan is most likely a bad EGR valve. Seems to be a common failure for this vehicle.I just replaced the valve for a friend. It’s an easy fix. The problem is actually in the sensor, but the sensor is built into the valve, so you have to replace the whole thing anyway. I bought the valve from the dealer. The information I listed above was from a Chrysler Technical Service Bulletin. It only pertains to the models listed.
would this apply to a 2007 mini with the 3.3 liter engine also? Just got this code tonight…
Not that I’m aware of. EGR sensor codes are very common on these minivans and it’s almost always a bad EGR valve. Replace it with a genuine Chrysler and the code should go away. Make sure you buy a new EGR tube gasket. The valve should come with a new steel EGR to cylinder head gasket. It’s an easy repair.
Thanks for this info. I have a 2008 Wrangler 3.8 and am wondering where to look for the EGR valve. I’d appreciate any advice. Thanks…
