Ford door switches—a known problem

Remember the pin/plunger switches that car makers used to install in the door jamb? Well, you won’t find them in Fords—some brilliant engineer had a “better idea.” They decided to place the switches inside the door right under the latch mechanism. When the door latches, a lever deactivates the switch and the body control module turns off the interior lights. Good so far….. The problem is that the switches gum up with grease from the latch mechanism or corrosion. That’s when interior lights stay on.

Some shops have reported success by saturating the latch mechanism with a rust penetrant and opening and closing the door about 20 or 30 times. That works the penetrant into the mechanism and some of it finds its way to the lever and switch. You really don’t have much to lose by trying this method because the only alternative is to remove the door trim panel and replace the switch.

I’ve tried this on a few Ford vehicles and had success. However, it’s not a long term fix. You will have to do it about twice a year.

Key stuck in ignition-Milan Fusion Zephyr

Ford has issued a TSB (07-2-1) regarding stuck keys in some 2006-07 Fusion, Milan, and Zephyr vehicles built before 9/4/06. The problem is a key stuck in the ignition cylinder or a shifter slider binding condition. The stuck key issues are caused by a binding shifter button. The button does not allow the pawl to contact the park detent switch. Mercury has issued a revised knob assembly to fix the problem. The instructions warn NOT TO REUSE the screws. New screws are included with the new part.

Belt Squeal – Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan— Fix

Ford has issued a technical service bulletin to fix a problem with certain 2006 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles. Ford reports that some of these vehicles with the 2.3L engine built before aa/1/2005 may have a belt squeal from the FEAD. Ford defines the FEAD as Front End Accessory Drive. Ford has issued a newly designed shield, belt, and tensioner to correct the squealing problem. Alignment instructions for the new tensioner are included in the TSB.

Low idle speed—Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan

These 2006-07 vehicles with the 2.3L engines may exhibit lower than normal idle speeds and late transmission upshifts. You won’t find any trouble codes related to this problem by scanning the PCM. Don’t waste your time trying to clean the idle air control valve. This is a software glitch and you must have the PCM flashed with updated software.
