Blog readers and friends constantly ask me how to find a reputable mechanic. I can tell you one way NOT to find a mechanic. Don’t fall for those FREE CHECKUP coupons or $10 oil changes. Get real. Do you really think they can afford to give that kind of labor away?

Here are 2 ways to find a good mechanic:

1) Join Angie’s list. Word of mouth is the best source and Angie’s List does a great job policing its member’s reviews. Yes, you have to pay a $7.50 membership fee. But you’ll be reading reviews from LOCAL people who have used the shops in your area. You don’t have to join for a full year. And what’s $7.50 to get the name of a good mechanic?

2) Go to the International Automotive Technicians Network. Iatn members are independently owned shops that band together to share technical information with one another so they can do a better job fixing your car. I’m a member and I’ve been impressed with the member’s level of knowledge. That doesn’t always mean they’re good businesspeople, but at least they’re not some chain operation.
